Harvey Sturdevant attended the University of Colorado, but enlisted in the Navy
on March 19, 1942 for flight training. He was designated a Naval Aviator, and
commissioned an Ensign, wef

Dec 31, 1942. He served in composite squadron VC-34 from April to September
1943. He served with fighting squadron VF-30 from October 1943 to July 1945.
He served on the carrier USS
Monterey
from November 1943 to May 1944, and on the light carrier USS
Belleau Wood
from January to June 1945. He received two DFCs, an AM, two strike/flight
DFCs, and five strike/flight AMs (for 40 combat missions). He was promoted to
Lt(jg) wef Jan 1, 1944, and to Lt wef May 1, 1945. He was promoted to Lt Cdr
wef Jan 1, 1952. On Aug 1, 1955 he transferred to the Regular Navy, with the
rank of Lt wef April 1, 1952. He was promoted to Lt Cdr wef July 1, 1957. He
served on the carrier USS
Saratoga
from December 1958 to February 1961 as Assistant CIC
[Combat Information Center]
Officer. He served as Ops Officer of Carrier Air Group CVG-1 from October 1961
to November 1962. He served with NORAD
[North American Air Defense Command]
from December 1962 to June 1966, and received a Joint Service Commendation
Medal. He retired from the Navy in July 1966.
