with his family after being discharged in 1864. Later, however, he left them,
and in 1893 started his trail camp in the San Gabriel Mountains, in the
foothills of the Sierra Madre.

LAKE STURTEVANT, WA, USA
This lake is located in a suburb of Seattle.
'The first homesteader on the site that would become Overlake was Clark M.
Sturtevant, a Civil War veteran. In 1873 he paddled up Mercer Slough,
reportedly breaking seven beaver dams on the way to his claim. On today's map,
his property covered territory bounded by Northeast and Southeast Eighth
Avenues and by 112th and 116th Streets. In 1875, Sturtevant bought a small
tract of land around
the lake that still officially bears his name today
, despite being more well-known as Lake Bellevue. Sturtevant reportedly married
a local Native woman, and made his living by trapping. In a single year, he
marketed the pelts of 130 minks, four otter, and several muskrats.'

STURDIVANT HALL
, Alabama, USA
Sturdivant Hall, located in Selma, Alabama, is one of the state's outstanding
tourist attractions. This magnificent structure is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and in the 1934 American Building Survey. Its
construction was begun in 1852 by Colonel Edward T. Watts, a local resident.
In 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sturdivant gave the community $50,000 to be used
to house their personal collection of antiques. This collection has been
augmented over the years - the result is an outstanding display of Southern
furnishings. Because of the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Sturdivant, the museum
bears their name.
The Sturdivant Museum Association, which operates the mansion and museum, was
organized by a group of interested citizens of Selma and Dallas County. The
association gives financial support in addition to the funds provided by the
City and County governing bodies, for restoration and renovation of the mansion.
This association continues to build upon the original collection of Mr.
Sturdivant and his wife, Elizabeth Reese Sturdivant.

(Ref Ghosts!) The one time president of the First National Bank of Selma is
believed to make appearances at his beloved home built in 1852. John McGee
Parkman was killed upon trying to escape from prison after being arrested for
speculating in cotton with bank funds. He has been spotted gazing out of the
cupola at the top of the mansion. Guides tell of sensing his presence in an
upstairs bedroom, and once the fire department was called when smoke was
observed pouring out an upstairs window. When they arrived, the window was
locked and no evidence of fire was found.
